session was initiated as a result of an I-message I gave to students
because I was concerned that a lot of my time was taken up with
students who were aware of our arrangement, knew what the skills
involved, but failed to observe what we had a greed. Students
were also going to a Maths Learning Centre and free computers
[i.e. computers in the library that weren't being used] remote
from the classroom and some were "keen" to get to the
activity and ran noisily from place to place.
So we talked about how this problem could be solved. My suggestion
was the people running and making disturbing noises stop doing
it. Some students thought they should get more warnings. Some
thought three was too many. Our procedures are always up for change
to get better outcomes and I find some of these arrangements become
irrelevant almost as soon as they are agreed. For example, I can't
recall giving out a penalty for running or being noisy going to
the computers to the group that devised these procedures.
